DIY or professional installation: an installer's honest take

A DIY kit is a fine way to watch one door. It falls short when the footage has to count: reliable recording, the right camera placement, and someone responding at 2am. If missing the moment would cost you, have it installed and monitored professionally.

Where DIY actually works

Some of the best money in security is a doorbell camera you stick up yourself. A smaller home with a couple of doors, a renter who cannot drill, a handy owner who enjoys the project: the kits are genuinely good at that job, and we will tell you so. We even sell our own kits, and we call ours DIT: do it together. You buy the kit, and if you want a hand, we walk you through the install, with a full pro install waiting if you are in Texas and would rather have it done.

The radio trick that defeats cheap systems

Here is the part the kit ads skip. Many consumer systems run their sensors on open 900 MHz wireless, the same band the old cordless phones used, the ones that knocked out the baby monitor when you answered a call. Key up a handheld radio on that band near some of these systems and the sensors lose their minds. The professional panels we install are encrypted and flag interference. That is a real part of what you are paying for.

No one to call

The DIY failure we see most is not dramatic. Something stops working, and there is nobody to come fix it. The install is not warrantied, the company will not send a technician, and the system quietly stays broken. On the homes around here, which often start at 5,000 square feet, a self-install was never going to cover it anyway.

A fair way to decide

  • One door, low stakes, renting: buy the kit, honestly.
  • Whole-property coverage, or footage you would hand to police or an insurance company: professional.
  • You travel, or the house sits empty some weeks: professional monitoring, full stop.
  • Already bought the gear? Builder-installed panels we can usually take over. Bring it to us and we will tell you what is worth keeping.

Questions we get

Can we keep some of our DIY gear?

Depends on the gear. Builder-installed panels we can usually take over, and some kit systems are worth replacing. We look before we quote.

What does professional monitoring add?

A trained human acting on the alarm while you sleep or travel, plus the certificate your insurer recognizes.

Do your cameras record if the internet drops?

Wired systems recording to an on-site recorder keep recording. That is the setup we lean on, for exactly that reason.
