Whole-home audio: zones, speakers, and what it really costs

Wireless whole-home audio starts around $5,000. A wired, in-ceiling system typically runs $10,000 to $20,000 for two to five zones, with a distribution amplifier, a streamer per zone, a rack, and the labor to make it disappear. Same music, two very different builds.

The zones that make sense

Most systems cover two to five zones: living room, outdoor space, an upstairs loft, sometimes the primary bedroom. Each zone is independently controlled, so the patio and the kitchen can play different things at different volumes without touching each other.

What is actually in the rack

A wired system is more than speakers in the ceiling. Behind it sits a distribution amplifier pushing power to every speaker, a streamer feeding each zone, and a rack keeping it serviceable. For scale, a current multi-zone amplifier alone runs around $3,500 before a single speaker goes in. That is why the honest range for a wired system is five figures, not hundreds per room.

About the lower numbers you will see online

Published averages often quote a few hundred to a thousand dollars per room. Those figures describe wireless speakers or add-on rooms, not a wired multi-zone system with dedicated amplification. Both are real products. One is a speaker in a room; the other is a system in a house.

Wired or wireless, honestly

Wireless Sonos speakers work, and in a finished home they avoid every cut in the sheetrock. The tradeoff is visible speakers and a ceiling that stays empty. If the house is pre-wired, or still under construction, in-ceiling is the version you will not want to undo.

Wireless gets you listening. Wired makes it disappear.

Questions we get

Can we start with two rooms and add later?

Yes. These systems scale, and starting with the rooms you actually live in beats wiring rooms nobody plays music in.

Does outdoor count as a zone?

It does, and it is one of the most used zones we install. Patio audio on its own volume is usually the first thing people show their friends.

Do you wire new construction?

Yes, and if your house is still open walls, this is the single best moment to run audio wiring you will ever get.
