Home theater vs home cinema: which one are you actually building?

A home theater is a great room in your house with serious sound. A home cinema is a purpose-built screening room that feels like the movies, down to subwoofers the size of furniture. We build theaters, and we bring in a dedicated cinema specialist when a project crosses that line.

What makes a cinema different

A true home cinema is a dedicated, purpose-built room: commercial-grade speaker systems, subwoofers measuring feet on every side, and enough low-end that a jet takeoff physically changes the air pressure in the room. Projection screens beyond 120 inches put you here, and so do budgets that climb toward six figures. It is an incredible thing to sit in, and it is a construction project as much as an electronics project.

When a theater is the right call

For most homes, the answer is a theater: a media room or living space with a large TV, a properly tuned receiver, real speakers, and a budget that lands between $5,000 and $10,000. You get the experience you wanted without rebuilding a wing of the house.

How we handle cinema projects

When a client wants the full cinema, it goes to our partner Define AV, a dedicated home cinema specialist with serious audio credentials, and we coordinate the project together so you get the expertise with clear roles from the start.

Questions we get

Where is the line between the two?

Dedicated room, acoustic construction, and commercial-scale equipment. If the room has another job during the day, you are building a theater, and that is not a lesser thing.

Can a theater be upgraded toward a cinema later?

Parts of it, yes, especially if the room was wired generously the first time. A full cinema is usually its own project.
